We need the library, and the library needs us.
As I enter my 25th year as a chief administrative officer, my perspective on public services has evolved in ways I never anticipated. Early in my career, I viewed libraries as “nice-to-haves” rather than “must-haves.” But today, I know better. Libraries are not just about books—they are community hubs, social service centers, and safe spaces where people from all walks of life access critical resources, whether for job-search assistance, technology, or simply a place to stay warm in winter or cool in summer.
Our library is not just about books. At heart, it is about our community.
Since opening our new library building in July 2023, we’ve seen just how vital these services are to our city. Visits have increased 264%. Computer use has risen 394%. Wireless usage has soared 913%. These numbers tell a clear story: people need what the library offers now more than ever.
Yet despite the library’s vital role, it still struggles with underfunding. As a city-run institution, it must compete with other essential municipal priorities. My experience as Greenfield’s Finance Director in 2023 made this reality clear. As much as we valued our new library—a proud beacon of opportunity—the city’s budget simply couldn’t stretch far enough to cover rising operational costs.

That’s why I joined the Greenfield Public Library Foundation’s Board of Directors. The Foundation was created to bridge the gap between what the city can fund and what the library truly needs. Without this public-private partnership, crucial capital improvements, technology upgrades, and staff development wouldn’t be possible.
This is where you come in. The Foundation was originally established to close the funding gap for building our state-of-the-art library. But the work isn’t done. The library needs continued support to meet growing demands.
